From helpfulness to accident insurance

Christiane Link writes with a wry and informed voice about the barriers she encounters daily. She has given me permission to translate some of her posts into English, so check out From helpfulness to accident insurance:
I went to my branch to cash a check. As I finished, I noticed that there was a crutch on [...]

ADA - 15th Anniversary

Excellent post from tikva in No Pity:
“I am with you. I love you. Lead on.”

A Break in the Weather

After a week of temperatures hovering right around 100 degrees F, it’s dropped to 70 and is raining. What a relief.

Disaster or Opportunity?

My hard drive at work died while I was on travel, and the backups I’ve been doing so meticulously don’t seem to exist any more.
Losing your hard drive is either a disaster or an opportunity. On the one hand, it’s a pain to reassemble all the tools I need (all right, want). Need to edit [...]

High altitude jam

We have a bumper crop of black currants. Anybody got good advice on what aspect of jam making (with commercial liquid pectin) needs to be modified for altitude? We’re at 1517 meters/4979 feet.

Little wheelchair guy abuse

This week’s meetings were in a building that our customer had recently renovated (new cubes, new carpeting, new furniture). They had also put up the new, company approved restroom signs:

Unfortunately, they neglected to actually renovate the restroom. I wanted to sneak back in the middle of the night and duct tape out the little wheelchair [...]

New Urbanism

Via Rolling Rains: Eleanor Smith of Concrete Change has some excellent observations on the shortcomings of New Urbanism in an article in the Ragged Edge.
Prospect here in Longmont is an example of New Urbanism. While I applaud breaking out of the cookie cutter developer mold, and rethinking the relationship of the house with its environs, [...]

Various

The boys and I had dinner at Trattoria Girasole, on Pearl Street, this evening. There was a very accomplished duo playing Greek, Gypsy, Celtic and Spanish music on violin, guitar, bouzouki: E Muzeki.
We also watched the first episode of Guns, Germs and Steel on PBS, which Youngest Son proclaimed a retread of 7th, 8th and [...]

Flown Recently?

The TSA wants your input on alternative screening.
Via No Pity:
From May 23 through August 23, 2005, TSA will be conducting a Persons with Disabilities and Medical Conditions Customer Satisfaction Survey.

Disability Blogroll

Christiane has posted an excellent Disability Blogroll. While her site is in German, the majority of the blogs listed are in English. Christiane is happy to take additional suggestions.

Southern CA

Off to southern California next week (Huntington Beach). What to wear, what to wear? Something tells me my normal all black office wear will be slightly out of place.
On the other hand, it’s in the high 90s here and in the low 80s there. That’ll be nice.

Jinxed

It’s a freaking jinx. Everytime I write about how well I’m doing, I slide back. Remind me never to say anything about it again.

The Trouble with Remission

There’s no trouble with remission. Remission is a wonderful thing.
The interesting thing about remission is that there’s nothing to write about. Life is so much less irritating when you can walk and see straight, and don’t have to spend 10 or 12 hours sleeping.
Going to the Deep Impact party (hundreds of people crowded into two [...]

Coverage

Our little home town newspaper had a nice article about Deep Impact, locally slanted. I must get a very early edition of the Denver Post, because its article, below the fold, was headlined “NASA waits for word on comet impact”, which means it must have been filed before midnight. By now, they’ve noticed that [...]

Impact!

Someone in the Deep Impact control room said, “I can’t believe they’re paying us to have this much fun.” It really is fun. The mission was utterly successful, absolutely no glitches or hangups at the last minute. It was a joy to watch. The images coming back from the impactor and the flyby were amazing.
