Let Them Eat Bread!

With my husband away for two weeks, my frustration with the bread situation here has come to a boil.

We make our bread. By “we”, I mean mostly my husband (it used to be mostly me, but now I have a full time job). With him gone, we’ve been reduced to buying store bread (the horror!).

Where can I get some decent bread around here? By “decent”, I mean something with a crust. Great Harvest does not count (in my not-so humble opinion, that stuff is cake masquerading as bread). I won’t drive to Denver for it, though.

    Since I find myself up on Broadway in Boulder several times a week now, sometimes I stop at the bakery near the Ideal market (north of the hospital on the east side of the street). I’ve only had their pretzels, but wonder if their bread might be decent.

    South Beach chez nous has pretty much put an end to my bread explorations, but I’d be glad to hear the results of yours ;-)

    Katja, I missed the concert. Yesterday was another day that I went down the rabbit hole with my RX concoctions and I completely forgot about it until right NOW. :-(

    Oh, don’t worry! I did look for you (as best I could, trying not to look as if I were looking around). By the end of the weekend, I had blown my voice, so if we were any good, it certainly wasn’t due to me.

    I did get to give a little (2 minute) lecture on the use of parody in Alice in Wonderland, which went pretty well.

    Good bread? Go to Breadworks on Broadway just a little south of the Hospital (and across the street). Its in the same shopping center as Moe’s Bagels and Vic’s coffee. Excellent bread with great crust!

    Now that Kellie and Patricia have both recommended Breadworks, I will certainly check it out. I’m pretty sure I’ve been in there - I’ve been to the Hungarian?Czech? cafe nearby, and to Vic’s, and to the wine shop, but can’t remember buying the bread.

    Patricia, I’m going to do the little Alice schtick again for the spring concert next May. I’ll remind you :-).

    Forget about driving to Boulder — check out Old Fashioned Bavarian Bakery on Ken Pratt, close to where Nelson & Price & Krnand the BNSF rail tracks all come together. It’s on the frontage road on the south side of Ken Pratt.

    I used to buy bread there, but they don’t appear to be selling to the public anymore. Have you actually gone in there in the last year?

    [Bavarian Bakery] Umm, not me *personally* but I have a friend who goes there about once a week. I assume he’s buying the bread, but maybe he knows somebody there.

    I guess I’ll have to go investigate. I’ll bring the camera.
