WordPress 2.0 permalink pain

I’ve been struggling with permalinks in WordPress 2.0 (on another site) ALL DAY. I’m irritated. I’m clearly not the only one.

How’d you get it to work? I have a blog running on WP 2.0 and I’m having to use the dorky “?p=76″ permalinks instead of meaningful title text.

On this install, by not updating the permalink structure after upgrading. brokenclay uses /wp_archives/%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/ as the permalink structure, and it only survived as part of my pre-upgrade .htaccess file (I think).

The other install (Cantabile) has a different problem - it’s all static pages, no posts. Apparently it doesn’t matter *what* you set the permalink structure to, it’s going to be parent-pagename/child-pagename/grandchild-pagename and die somewhere around three levels down. I found a description of this behaviour on WordPress.org support, but of course I can’t find it again now.
